"The Healing touch of Bamboo"
Dr. Nirmala Chongtham is a leading authority on the food value and health benefits of bamboo shoots. She works as a Professor in the Department of Botany, Panjab University, Chandigarh, India and works with a team of seven Ph.D scholars in the area of bamboo shoot nutrition and health benefits. Her love of bamboo came from her homeland of Manipur, a land of abundant bamboo resources. Nirmala was key to the successful scientific program of the 10th World Bamboo Congress Korea in 2015, serving as Chair of the Technical Committee, and serves as Co-Chair of this same committee for the 11th WBC Mexico. She is a recipient of a grant from the Ned Jaquith Foundation (USA) to aid her ongoing research on how the usage of bamboo shoots can help in the economic development of society and food security, especially in rural areas.
